A set of question prompts to support head of department preparation for an Ofsted interview about a subject area. This was done for English but works for all department areas.

This document was created to self evaluate the department against the Ofsted 'good' criteria and was incredibly useful in anticipation of an Ofsted visit.

This document was written to outline the vision for the English department and is built around the skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Medium term plans that prepare students for 9-1 AQA English language paper 1 and paper 2 reading and writing. The medium term plans attached are highly detailed and include: - weekly homework tasks - clear explanation on what should be covered and analysed - weekly assessments These updated medium term plans have been created to interleave the literature texts. Specific links are made to Jekyll and Hyde, An Inspector Calls and Jekyll & Hyde. E.g. - students will read articles on arranged marriage for their paper 2 study which creates links to Juliet. They will also explore the gender pay gap to create links to AIC. Most extracts are included. Some extracts are taken from the literature texts. Any missing texts and extracts are available in the Oxford University press AQA text books 1 and 2. MTP for paper 2 also included the new speaking and listening component. Resources also available.

Detailed long term plans (LTPs) for year7,8,9,10 and 11 that have been created to reflect the new GCSE specification 9-1 skills. These detailed long term plans contain the following information: - The key concepts that are specific to that unit. - A clear outline of additional skills that are to be taught as part of the unit that help students to work towards the skills needed for other GCSE 9-1 examination components - speaking and listening is signposted The year 10/11 LTP contains interleaving strategies. Resources to support the development of Accelerated Reader programme and DEAR sessions which are dedicated to reading. (DEAR) In my school students read for 20 minutes daily. Resource bundle includes: - a presentation for staff on Accelerated reader including purpose and benefits - including educational research regarding the importance of reading - a presentation for students on Accelerated reader and DEAR - templates for book and library passes - example book marks - an example student planner page to log reading - a presentation on reading engagement strategies

A selection of engaging classroom resources including: - 2 minute timer - 5 minute timer - Name spin - randomly selects a student in the class to participate - brain gym power of activities to get student brains working ahead of a lesson - optical illusion starters to get the brain woken up

A resource that was delivered to heads of department to help them prepare for the new specification GCSE 9-1. The power point guides heads of department through a process of preparing for their new look qualifications and covers the following: - the importance of embedding skills into KS3 medium term plans - the importance of creating age appropriate 9-1 style assessments for KS3 Also included are: - example grade boundaries that have been created - example medium term plan that embeds skills for new 9-1 GCSE

Resources to support the development of the following questioning and higher order thinking skills and strategies: - Blooms taxonomy - Socratic questioning - No hands - Pause time - Secret 7 - Big question Ideal for leading departmental or whole school training on questioning strategies. Resources included: - CPD power point presentation on questioning strategies with tasks for staff to complete to get them thinking about their existing practice and how they could develop this - Socratic questioning prompt sheet to support student development of their questioning of each other within lessons - Links to Ofsted expectations - Departmental audit template

Example LTPs and curriculum plans that outline specifically how parents can help support their child through their child's study of English. The long term plans map out where students will develop the skills necessary to access the new specification 9-1 GCSE English language and literature papers.
